Vietnam is a country with more than 2000 miles of coastline and three different weather systems. Because of differences in latitude and the marked variety in topographical relief, the Vietnam weather tends to vary considerably from place to place.

Mountainous Far North
Sapa, Ha Giang, Bac Ha

The climate in Sapa and Vietnams far north-west is divided into two seasons: the dry season runs from October to late March and the wet season runs from April to September. It can get very cold in December and January, especially at night.

The best months to travel in the north-east (Ha Giang) is during the dry season, from October to April.

North Vietnam

Hanoi, Halong  and North Vietnam has a distinct winter and summer season. The cool but mostly dry winter lasts from November to April when temperatures average 17-22C with the coldest months being January, February and March.

Hanoi Average Temperature in December is 19C, Humidity is 67%.

Central Vietnam

Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Quy Nhon & Nha Trang

Hoi An: average max temperature in December is 22C, average min temperature is 20C. Humidity is 88%. December is the coolest month in Central Vietnam with average temperature around 20C. This is also the most humid time in the year.

North of Nha Trang can get cool weather.

South Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City, The Mekong Delta, Dalat & Phu Quoc

The average temperatures in the south range between 25 - 35C year round.

Clear skies and sunshine are the norm in December.


Typhoon season in the Pacific is generally in May November. On average, 27 tropical storms form in this basin every year.
